What is Massage Therapy?

Massage is the practice of manipulating soft tissue in the body, such as muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Massage therapy is a clinically-oriented healthcare alternative that can assist with everyday job tension pain discomfort as well as muscular overuse and several chronic pain situations.

Only a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) should provide massage therapy. Anyone may visit an RMT of their choice in British Columbia, and massage treatment can be used to treat both acute and chronic ailments. RMTs specialize in treating disease, injury rehabilitation, and disability with massage therapy.

Although RMT services are not covered under British Columbia Medical Services Plan. However, many extended health benefit plans will cover all or part of the treatments provided by an RMT. A referral or prescription is not necessary to see an RMT, although some insurance carriers may need one. ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia) may cover RMT treatments if you have injuries resulting from a motor vehicle accident.

WorkSafe BC may also cover RMT treatments if you happen to have injuries resulting from a workplace accident or injuries relating to work. BlueBird Health accepts all forms of healthcare insurance providers in B.C.

Massage Therapy FAQs

  • What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a type of therapeutic treatment that is used to cure, relieve, or improve one's health. It involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body. Massage has been used in nearly every culture since ancient times and was one of the first pain-relieving techniques discovered (even apes give each other massages!).

In Canada, massage therapists must be registered with the massage therapy college in their respective provinces.

  • Is Massage Therapy Tax Deductible in Canada?

Only some provinces in Canada allow you to claim a tax credit for massage therapy, but massage therapy is a qualified medical expense in Canada.

The following provinces currently allow you to use registered massage therapy as a medical expense tax credit: BC, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Ontario and PEI.

  • Do You Need a Doctor's Note for Massage Therapy?

No, you do not need a doctor's note to see a registered massage therapist.

You may need to acquire a doctor's note for a referral to an RMt to be reimbursed by certain organizations, however.

  • Should Massage Therapy Hurt?

Massage therapy should not hurt, but it's normal to feel sore after receiving a massage. A massage carries blood and nutrients to your muscles, whilst eliminating toxins. After stimulating muscles you may use infrequently, you may experience DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness).

  • How Much Does Massage Therapy Cost?

Registered massage therapy can typically cost $120-$175 CAD for a 60-minute massage.

RMT's typically charge more in Canada, because RMT's are highly educated and are licensed medical professionals.

Massage Therapy Preventative Care Program

An overall picture of your current health and thorough health history will be required by your massage therapist in order to create a treatment plan that is tailored to you. If a massage therapist determines that another healthcare practitioner would be better suited to treat your condition, they will make the necessary referral.
